About the Food Zone

Most people love pizza. Even when it is a frozen one that you just need to cook in the oven for 10 minutes before eating it. But do you know all the different steps that pizza has gone through since the wheat for its dough and the tomato for its sauce were harvested in the field?

This zone will look at the engineering of food, and food safety. How is food produced, stored, and delivered to our tables? Food engineers think of better and more efficient ways of growing plants and rearing animals, they develop new heating and freezing methods; they also develop food packaging as well as preventing bacteria from growing in our food.

In this zone we’ll meet an engineer helping farmers to grow the best quality grains, and another who’s trying to make food healthier while still tasting great. One engineer is trying to help Heineken factories save money while they brew their drinks. One is making sure Coca Cola factories are as efficient as they can be, and another one is investigating microbes which can generate methane from food waste.

You can find out more about the engineers in this zone, and what they work on by reading their profiles. Click on their names at the top of this page to find out more!
